The EU`s recent agreement with the South American trading bloc Mercosur – including Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay – was concluded in July. Ahead of a speech in Sydney on Thursday night to the European Australian Business Council, Senator Birmingham told the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age that he believes trade agreements are “primarily trade commitments between countries” and that they should “focus on trade realities”. France`s ambassador to Australia from 2014 to 2017, Lecourtier, said the pandemic had not slowed down the FTA process and that the UK`s exit from the EU could lead to greater business opportunities for Australian companies working in Europe. As China has exported nearly 40 percent of Australia`s export market, Senator Birmingham said Australia`s trade would be more equitably distributed “in an ideal world.”
